Despite not being the most original, I can honestly get why this could be someone's favorite 2D Mario (I mean it's my 3rd). It had some tight level design, the way it evolved the 2D formula was great (like the moveset), and it had the best bosses out of the 2D line-up. I even like the blue shell.
