TikTok and CapCut no longer available in United States
As of Sunday 19th January 2025, the popular social media app TikTok and video editing application CapCut have suspended access to users in the United States.
As we are expecting this to be a hot topic, we’re putting up this post as a megathread to discuss it.
If you’re looking for alternative editing software, please check out the /r/videoediting monthly software post, a link to which can be found in this post:
There’s also a pinned sticky of !freesoftware below.
Update 18:20 GMT:
Tiktok has started restoring services in the US. It's not immediately clear or mentioned how this affects CapCut.
Update 20th January
CapCut is apparently still unavailable with no official statement as to when and if service will be restored.
Please be aware that there appear to be VPN companies taking advantage of this situation to try to spam Reddit with ads pretending to be comments discussing CapCut.
I have read several user reports that VPNs may NOT work to bypass the ban, as CapCut may be blocking you based on the country your account is tied to (potentially if you are using a US-based credit/debit card) rather than the location you are accessing the application from. Some people are having success though.
Update 21st January
Users on /r/Capcut are reporting that access to the desktop and web versions has been restored.
Update 21st January #2
/r/Capcut users are reporting that access to the phone app has been restored.
