Hiatuses on flags

Is there a name for the phenomenon of intentionally leaving out a part of a flag as a means of protest? It seems like that it is common occurrence all around the world, for example the white blue white antiwar Russian flag or the Hungarian counterrevolution flag of 1956 with the hole in the middle.
I would love to know more about that.
