Credit Card for refunded transactions

I just graduated and started applying for miles credit card. I am just suddenly wondering, for example in the event I book a hotel or service that has free cancellation. Will I earn the miles for the hotel stay on the month that I booked the hotel or after I stay in the hotel. Because what if i cancel afterwards, like do I keep the miles I earned from that purchase? Thanks!
