What is the lesson? Holes left behind in knit interlock

I ripped and adjusted a seam in my armhole for this shirt and the ripped stitching has not only left a scar but you can see there is actually little rips in the fabric / punched fibers laying on the fabric surface. I don’t think these holes are going to “wash out”. I’ve never experienced this before and I’m wondering what the lesson is — did I use the wrong needle type maybe?

This is 100% heavy-ish cotton interlock (this one: https://stonemountainfabric.com/product/lady-mcelroy-cotton-interlock-haylo-white/) and I used a Singer 70/09 ball point needle. Thread was Gutterman sew all.

I paid full price for this fabric so it’s a bummer — but I have a little more for another project. What can I do differently so that my seams are reversible?
