Cookie cutter houses as far as the eye can see

We're thinking of moving back to the RDU area to be close to family, but every time I look at homes in Cary/Apex (I'm thinking good schools and access to parks and trails for the little one), all I see are subdivisions where one house looks just like the one next to it. Do you recommend any areas in the 400-500k range that are unique architecturally?
