These are my moment-to-moment reactions to Emilia Perez as a born and raised Mexican

I went into it completely blind about a month ago. All I knew was that some friends had said it was great.

-Oh, this takes place in Mexico. I didn’t know that.

-Wait, why is she writing a legal case in the middle of a tianguis? Who does that? 🧐

-That “no mames” felt weird, did a Mexican person write the script? *checks the internet* Oh! This was written by a French guy. I wonder why 🤨

-Zoe Saldaña doesn’t sound Mexican, that’s slightly upsetting but I’m reading that this film won the jury prize at Cannes so I guess I’ll continue watching 🤷🏻‍♀️

-Wait, did Manitas just say “I want to turn into a woman” ?! I’m pretty sure that wording is off… 🫣, but who am I to judge?

-Oh God, now there’s a song about vaginoplasty with the lyrics “Penis to vagina, Man to Woman woman to man” 😐

-What is Selena Gomez doing in this film? Is that Spanish? Ok, She said something about having a sister in the US so I guess she grew up in the States and hence, the accent.😅

-How did she not realize that her spouse is a trans woman who’s been on hormone therapy for years? 🤔 I guess I’ll have to suspend disbelief for a bit, after all, everyone said this film was great. 

-Oh! Zoe Saldaña says she’s Dominican now it makes sense. But… why was this necessary? I’m sure they could have cast a Mexican actress for this.

-Emilia sounds like she’s from Spain. Is the actress Mexican? *Checks the internet. She is, in fact, from Spain* IS ANYONE IN THIS FILM MEXICAN?!!😒😒

-She comes back home and pretends to be her cousin. HOW IS THE WIFE NOT NOTICING!

-Oh wow! This song in which the child says “you smell like mezcal and guacamole” is sure cringe😬 I’m starting to think that my discomfort throughout the move has been justified.😐

-HASTA ME DUELE LA PINCHE VULVA SOLO DE ACORDARME???😂 🙊 Why would anyone say that?  Especially how come a person who barely speaks Spanish would say something like that? Who did this translation!!! WHAT IS THIS??😱😱😱

-What? She’s now “helping” by telling the relatives of people that SHE MURDERED, DISAPPEARED AND LIKELY TORTURED OR TRAFFICKED?!! Is this supposed to be charity? Is Emilia supposed to be redeeming herself with this?😡😡😡😡

-Oh now comes a song about families and their missing loved ones. How can anyone think that this is a topic that is appropriate to write a musical number about? DID THE PERSON WRITING THIS UNDERSTAND WHAT THEY’RE TALKING ABOUT? 🤬🤬🤬🤬 Hundreds of thousands of people in Mexico live with this tragedy and the director thinks it’s a good idea to make it into a musical??!!!! 

-You know what? I do not need to keep watching something that is making me feel like throwing up. *Turns off TV*

-*It wins a bunch of Golden Globes including best musical and it's short-listed for an Oscar* 🤯🤯🤯
