The closest attempt at a Three Peat was the 1990 49ers.

The 49ers won both in 1988 and 1989, with an all time legendary football team. They played the Giants in the NFCCG in the 1990 season. This would end up being Joe Montana’s final start as a 49er. The game was dominated by heavy defenses on both teams. The fourth quarter would mark the turning point for both teams as Montana would get sacked by Giants defender Leonard Marshall, which left him injured and unable to play the rest of the game. He would be benched in favor of Steve Young for the rest of his duration in San Francisco.

The Giants kicked 5 field goals in this game all from kicker Matt Bahr, perhaps the greatest kicker performance in the history of the league given what was at stakes. New York didn’t score a single touchdown. The final play of the game was NY’s 5th field goal in a play that would decide the NFC’s representative for the Super Bowl, in which Bahr successfully made the kick. The final score was 15-13 Giants. Pat Summerall’s famous words were “there will be no three peat.” The Giants would go on to win the Super Bowl against Buffalo.

The Dallas Cowboys would also come close in the 1994 NFCCG, but the 49ers would beat them there in a much less close game.

To this day, this is the closest any team has come to achieving a three peat. Now the question is, will the Chiefs get further? Or is this the end of the road.

Edit: Ok I’m seeing people get confused, it’s gotta be three SB wins in a row. It doesn’t count if you make three SBs and lose the first or second.
