Why isn't Super Mario Bros. (1993) streaming on Disney+ or available to buy digitally?
Back in the '90s, Disney distributed Cinergi movies such as Medicine Man, Evita and Alan Smithee, Burn Hollywood Burn in North and Latin America while Cinergi retained international rights (minus Die Hard with a Vengeance which Fox distributed in North America and Disney handled international). One of those films included was Super Mario Bros. (1993) which Disney released through their Hollywood Pictures banner in North America and Latin America with Cinergi handling all international distribution outside of those territories.
But the funny thing is even though all of Cinergi's that Disney released are still available to rent or buy on streaming platforms, Super Mario Bros. (1993) isn't available to rent or buy in video-on-demand platforms and it isn't streaming on Disney+ either in North America but internationally, it's available to buy or rent via streaming platforms because it had different international distributors.
Everybody keeps saying that "oh, it's probably because of rights issues." but I think that Disney is somehow embarrassed about this film that they can't even release the film on Blu-ray, digital and on their Disney+ streaming platform. Hopefully, they do a re-release on those platforms someday so that people in North America can finally see the movie. That's my take on this issue.
