999 emergency operator needs improvement
What has been your experience with dialing 999?
Personally, I am rather appalled at the limited experience I've had.
The first time I ever called 999, I witnessed a scary car crash from the window of my apartment. The crash occurred right at the intersection outside the apartment, and a car was upside down in the road. I hard the loud bang and went to my balcony and saw the aftermath.
Not wanting to waste any time in the event of serious injury, I called 999.
The first operator couldn't seem to hear me. My BM is not very good, but my understanding is that they were telling me they couldn't hear me (while I was mid-sentence). After about ten seconds, the operator HUNG UP on me.
The second operator could hear me and I explained the situation to her. They dispatched an ambulance and a police car. In the end there were no life threatening injuries, so the ambulance left without patients.
The second time I called 999 was on the morning of Feb 6. I got into an accident myself, car swerved in front of me and emergency braked. I was uninjured, but I wanted a police deployed to the scene in case the other car ran away.
Explained to the operator, they understood, and after explaining details and location, said they would connect me to the police.
Silence for about 10 seconds, and the call was disconnected.
I called 999 again, but it seemed like the operator couldn't hear me, and hung up only 5 seconds later.
Frustrated, I decided to flag down a nearby traffic police (this was about 500m away from crash site). He said I need to go report to police station myself since my car is still drivable.
The concern that I had is how happy the operators are to hang up on you. I know in other countries that sometimes, an operator has to keep the call for at least 3 minutes before hanging up in order to assess the situation. This is absurd, what if I'm in a literal life/death situation and the operator just hangs up like lol can't hear you buddy bye bye
