I think the lab diamonds disruption of the diamond industry as a whole is so fascinating. Even though now we can reach for the stars basically and get our dream rings, why hold back? Is it due to old stereotypes and prejudice?
I have known from the beginning I heard about them, I wanted Lab. I feel like we are in the middle of the shift between old and new diamond ideals and stereotypes and here is what I mean.
Since we can now get diamonds as big as you want, do you care people can assume they are lab? Especially if your partner is not affluent or successful? And what is the point of their accessibility if we dampen ourselves and go small to fit our “economic standing.”
Even people that love lab diamonds, and want bigger rocks, (because you can do that now how cool! So why not???) still say things like “oh don’t go to big you don’t want it to look fake” or “if it doesn’t match your partners salary people will know for a fact it’s not mined.”
I’m torn. I know that ethically and cost-wise I LOVE lab grown!!!! But a small part of me does wonder about the judgment.. my partner works at a restaurant and he wants to get me a huge diamond (love him so much.) and that is guaranteeing people will “know.” But also who gives a fuck?
Because ultimately we have the technology now that allows anyone to enjoy pretty sparkly diamonds and there is no longer a massive paywall BUT we all know how people love to gatekeep their luxuries so I think some people throwing fits about labs stems from jealousy and no longer feeling special anymore because more people get to enjoy it and also own a big sparkly ring(womp womp)!!
If anyone asked me “is it real” I would say YES and maybe not even elaborate, because it is a real diamond. Just like IVF babies are real humans and ice from the fridge is still ice!
I took marketing in college so I already know the fact that the mined diamonds are a manufactured value, falsely created supply and demand scam lol. So even more reasons again to not fall for that!
Basically I’m asking what is your outlook on this? Go as big as you want because you can or hold back and go middle road so “people can’t tell.”
