Is the fact that a band is Seattle-based a requisite for being a grunge?

I know that grunge itself is a genre strongly rooted to Seattle (no wonder its other name is Seattle sound) but let’s have STP for example. The band was formed in San Diego, yet it is still renowned for being one of the greatest grunge bands besides the Big4. What are your thoughts on this matter?
