I made a comprehensive fuel savings calculator
As long as $/kWh remains reasonable, you are pretty much guaranteed fuel savings if you switch to an EV. And so I made a comprehensive fuel savings calculator to help you compare fuel costs & savings across different car models, and their varying fuel types and hopefully give you the nudge to go electric. The calculator even allows you to define your percentage of city v. highway driving to personalize the comparison for your situation.
The calculator allows you to manually input your efficiency figures when comparing, or to automatically use EPA-estimated values based on the car model & year you select. If you go by the EPA-estimated values, the calculator will automatically load all fuel types for that model, and their default pricing (which you can edit to suit your local fuel prices).
For example, if you select the 2025 Mazda CX-90 4WD PHEV, the calculator loads EPA-est MPG for "Premium Gasoline" and a $/gallon field. And also loads MPGe for "Electricity" with corresponding $/kWh field. The calculator handles those MPGe to kWh/100mi conversions automatically.
Using a slider, it then allows you to approximate how often you use one type of fuel over the other. It's just an attempt to be as accurate & personalized as possible for your situation. Might work for some, might not for others. You can always leave it on default (50-50).
FYI: You also get this level of granularity when you manually input your MPG/e figures too. Yeah, I know sometimes EPA estimates are waaay off!
And the icing on the cake is you get to visualize the fuel costs & savings using a bar graph & line graph over an annual, 3-year, 5-year and 10-year horizon. For some reason, simple graphs make my noob head "understand" data fast.
I know there's cost calculator linked in this sub, but just wanted something a tad more comprehensive.
Hopefully this helps someone make a solid decision. Happy to hear your experiences!
EDIT 1: Thanks a lot for the incredible feedback! It's a free tool, and I work a 9-5 and with family commitment. But immediately I get some time, I'll start implementing the fixes you recommended, beginning with the most requested. I'll update y'all!
EDIT 2: Whoa! Thanks to all those that are donating! With this support, I can keep the development going!
PS: This is really a hobby for me now. A nice fun after-work experiment.
EDIT 3: I wonder why most dealerships don't include a similar calculator on their sites, and perhaps use their actual inventory as the dataset. I think as a potential car shopper, I would find it engaging and useful to make a purchase decision. Don't you think? Or maybe I should make this calculator embeddable... now that's a thought!
