I'm currently reading late 70s YA book with my kids, and I noticed they added/changed parts of the book to reflect modern technology. Is this common?

I'm reading my kids a book I loved as a young person and when we were reading last night I noticed a part where a character says something along the lines of "it's too easy for kids to just use Google for the answer." I thought that was weird since I remember reading the book in the 1980s, so I looked it up, and yes, it was published in 1978. There is no statement in the book that indicates changes were made.

Is it common for books to be altered to reflect modern technologies? Is it done at the behest of the author or publisher? Have you seen any examples of this?
