Do we interact with enough radioactive material to justify buying a detection device?

With power plants leaking their nuclear waste into the ocean, farmers using radiation to treat crops, or just antiques made out of questionable materials, I wonder if I should be checking my food and water etc. Anyone have any advice? Or am I just neurotic?
