Airplanes landing in fog

Hi friends, I was always wondering why some flights are delayed or landing at the different airport because of the thick fog. I'm asking because I heard that modern plains have an auto landing features. I also know that pilots can see a „virtual" landing strip on the avionic computers screen. So why is that they need to delay flights?
