Victim of scam on college campus

I went out to get some supplies for my dorm. I parked in the parking lot next to my dorm to drop off the supplies because I didn’t want to carry them half way accross campus on the approved parking spots. The lot next to my dorm is temporary parking. Some guy ,who definitely looked older than a typical college student,in the lot was sitting in his car and asked if there were any branches for the bank he used which happened to be the same bank as me. I told him i only knew of the atms nearby.

He asked if I could transfer him $60 and he would cashapp me back that same money because he was struggling to deposit his check on the mobile app. When I had asked for his info to help with the transfer he said he didn’t remember and needed to type it. He then took my phone and was holding it for a very long time trying to scan something on his phone. I was trying to see but he was holding my phone away from me. I was uneasy as I didnt know what he was doing but he kept assuring me that he wasn’t doing anything wrong to me.

When he had finished he had told me that he accidentally transferred his entire account into mine. It ended up being about $10k. Immediately I was a bit scared and didn’t know what he had done or how he did that but I was concerned about my parents seeing my account and I was not trying to have this much money showing that i didn’t know where it came from. He said that because he had a business account it wouldn’t allow for transfers so he had to take half in cash and half in cash app. He seemed like he knew how to get the money out to my account and I wasn’t thinking straight so I just blindly followed his word. While holding my phone he transferred the money to himself.

Afterwards when checking the account realized it was not a transfer but a check deposit. I immediacy reported this to my bank and said that I believe this was a scam as he was very quick in received the money. The bank did put in a fraud claim and determine I was a victim of fraud but would still be held liable as the funds were deposited in my account. I had thought if the funds went through it was valid. I know now that banks allow early access to funds for accounts with good standing. I also reported the information to campus authorizes and am now waiting a response

I want to know how bad is the situation I got myself in and if there is a possibility I will be ok in the end. My parents are very disappointed and I have many regrets of not just walking past the guy or if I had just never went to my car that night I leave. If the police catch him can I get the funds back or will I have to pay back regardless if my account still stands.
