Landlord upset that they are responsible for building upkeep?

Hi all,

My BFF just moved to a wicked expensive apartment, has had some building problems since move-in.

Night 1, I was staying overnight to celebrate my buddies "awesome" new place. But we noticed a smell... like gas. We started feeling tired and I was getting nauseated with a headache while in the kitchen. Was it a gas leak, we wondered? YES! IT WAS, a gas leak from the (apparently broken) stove. I started dialing the gas company once i realized i was feeling sick while in the kitchen, and my buddy called his LL, and texted them, no answer. It was midnight. The gas company sent out a worker, who found a leak, and shut off gas to the apartment. The gas worker told us that the stove was the problem, and showed us where the broken part of the stove was. Great , I thought, that way we can tell the LL where the broken part is when they get out there eventually. - the next day: the LL was ANGRY at my friend. The LL said, "you should have called me first...not the gas company. It's probably just a pilot light that went out...im all the way on the other side of the state.". We explained a legit gas leak had been found, and the stove was broken. He said he'd send in a plumber the next day, which the LL did.

A week goes by. Things seem to be ok for my friend, now. Well, my friend was texting me like crazy yesterday because they can't get into their apartment. I was 3 hrs away from them at the time, couldn't help them at that point. Apparently, the lock broke on their door. A neighbor let them hang out upstairs in their place until the LL showed along with a locksmith and replaced the lock.

Seems fine, right?

Yall... today my buddy sent me voicemails from the landlord, and the LL is absolutely bitching my friend out for calling the gas company, and daring ( this word was edited for spelling) to ask for any further building maintenance. LL sounds like* (spelling edit) they are holding my friend responsible for "going into debt...I had to pay 1500 for a plumber and I have all this debt on my credit card...I'm not providing a concierge service. I expect not to hear from you regarding any further maintenance requests...i had to leave in the middle of a meeting to get out there...i need boundaries with tenants...i cant have this happening from tenants asking for all this maintenance...this is just too much, i cant handle it."

Am I absolutely nuts, or this LL out of line here? Plus my bro is taking it personally and feels like he is being a pain in the ass.

Any thoughts, guys? Thanks.
