Gripes with Recently Purchased Backbone and PS Portal
I recently bought a Backbone and PS Portal. I'm going to list some gripes of mine that I wish I knew going in for anyone shopping for one. I'll also end with things I think they do especially well.
My PS5 Pro is connected to my network with an ethernet cable so I had no stability issues. I used my Backbone with my iPhone 13 mini and official PS Remote Play app with no extra fuss.
I initially bought the Backbone after extensive research comparing the two, then impulse bought the PS Portal after the Backbone gave a terrible first impression. Despite all my gripes, I'm going to keep both and use the PS Portal at home and Backbone for travel.
Backbone (Gen 2 PS Edition)
-Inital setup is utterly miserable. You need the app for firmware updates, but it heckles you for your email, phone number and to subscribe to their useless service.
-If you don't subscribe, and you accidentally press the orange Backbone or share button, it opens the app and heckles you to subscribe. Even if you uninstall the app, pressing the buttons makes iOS heckle you to reinstall the app.
-3.5mm jack on the Backbone is trash; slightly bumping the jack sends static through my headphones. The port is also very thin so you're limited to using headphones with a slim 3.5mm jack. I just use Airpods.
-Battery life when using remote play is worse than I'd hope, but partially a fact of life with mini phones.
+I like the form factor and portability. The size is perfect for my small hands.
PS Portal
-It's not as "it just works" as I was hoping. It STILL doesn't automatically disable HDR when connecting. I've also had 2 cases where it wouldn't connect unless I reset my PS5.
EDIT: After some more tinkering, I discovered my PS5 treated my powered-off AV receiver as a separate screen and would turn on HDR. See one of my below comments for steps for fix.
-The built in speakers are utter trash and barely audible unless at max volume. This forces you to use proprietary PS Link or 3.5mm headphones. Closed back headphones aggravate my tinnitus so buying either of the PS Link headphones is out of the question for me. This is a downgrade from the convenience of iPhone+Airpods.
-The USB-C and 3.5mm ports are in an awkward spot on the rear bracket and plugging/unplugging cables require a lot of force. It's also cramped so you can only use headphones with a slim jack. I just use stock Apple 3.5mm Earpods.
-The screen isn't as good as I'd hope, but I am spoiled by OLED screens. It's too bright except on its lowest brightness settings. Being able to use night shift on iOS is also a point in favor of the Backbone for gaming at night.
+Much better battery life, about the same as a Dualsense.
+Although it's not very portable and I wouldn't want to travel with it, it's great for playing games that need a larger screen, or when you want Dualsense haptics.
