Has anyone overcome OCD or improved?

I’ve suffered with OCD since age 6, it started with hand washing and it’s got worse over the years with contamination OCD, counting, checking and horrific intrusive thoughts. I did have a ocd therapist for a while but it wasn’t really working her advice was to just ‘stop’ what I was doing and whenever I get intrusive thoughts just tell them to ‘f off’ which wasn’t very helpful for me.
