Question about Monthly pass

I'm planning to buy a monthly pass for the month of February now that they have become available. My question is will the pass be available for me to use for the remainder of January or does it only become "activated" on February 1st?

Just trying to figure out if I need to buy an additional 10 trip pass to cover the trips I'll need to do for January.
