Ice Report 1-14-2025
The ice grew about 2 inches more this week, with most lake sheets reporting more than 12 inches of clear ice.
Averages Cedar lake: 12 5/8 inches Lake of the Isles: 12 5/8 inches Bde Maka Ska: 12 1/8 inches Lake Harriet: 12 5/8 inches Loring Lake: 11 1/8 inches
The thickest ice is still found on the southern shore of Lake Harriet at more than 16 1/4 inches, but the average of Harriet was about 12 5/8 inches. I saw some car tire marks on the ice down there (not sure if that is legal).
I wasn’t able to make as many bore sites this time but still drilled about 600 inches. But since the ice is so thick it isn’t as needed to know so many bore sites.
I was able to go through Cedar Lake channel. And so too did a large number of people by the amount of foot prints. For the most part this area seems safe, but a minor thaw is approaching and I am hesitant to say it will be safe after that time. But currently it seemed safe and about 7 inches thick.
Notably, Lake Street channel is still NOT safe and this has been marked by the DNR. The ice here was just barely 4 inches, and extremely unstable.
The art shanty on Lake Harriet will be safe.
