Mavericks Defensive Weaknesses / Kings Matchups

I think it's clear what we struggle against post-trade: off-ball movement shooters, lineups with 5 shooters that move the ball well, and speedy rim attackers/creators. If you're not sure what I'm talking about re-watch all of our post-trade losses (Pacers, Celtics, Pacers, Cavs, 76ers), they all killed us with those qualities. And all the teams we beat (Thunder, Wizards, Spurs, Suns, Raptors, Heat, Pistons, Bulls) lacked what kills us and notably often played at least 1 non-threat we could help off of. If a team plays non-threats against us our defense is waaay better. We have good enough size, rebounding, and on-ball defenders now to slow a lot of teams, but still have real off-ball weaknesses that can be exploited against certain lineups and schemes.

Everything is trending for that Kings double header being the most important 2 games of the season left.

Impossible to predict how seeding shakes out, but odds currently are that New Orleans takes 5, the Warriors and Lakers take 9/10, so we battle the Kings and Suns for 6-8. We hold the tie breaker with the suns and have a more favorable schedule, so our 2 matchups with the Kings could very well determine whether we make the playoff or play-in. With the hurting and unproven Wolves currently projecting as the 3, it's a really big deal if we get the 6th seed imo.

The Kings on paper aren't as good as us in my opinion, but their potential to move the ball, play 5 shooters, feature off-ball movement shooters, and have it all led by a speedy creator make them a really tough matchup for us. How are we going to stay in front of Fox AND cover Sabonis out to the 3pt line AND rotate to or chase Monk, Huerter, & Murray?

I'm not as low on the PJ Maxx lineup as others, but do fear Sabonis would dominate down low if we go to it too often against them in order to better cover their shooters. Something I'll be watching closely these next couple weeks is how well Luka, THJ, Gafford, and Lively cover out to the 3pt line. That skill for the whole team (but those players in particular) I think is going to be vital in determining how far this team goes.

I think, if healthy, our offense will be enough against anyone. I think our defense is fine if we can focus on one or two guys and rotate off non-threats. The issues above are what can be exploited against us and limit our ceiling.

This would mean the below for playoff matchups:

HARD - Nuggets, Kings
POTENTIALLY HARD - Thunder, Clippers (OKC if they bench Giddey, Clips if they are healthy and sit Zubac)
BRING THEM ON - Pelicans, Warriors, Lakers, TWolves, Suns (we know who to guard tight and who to help off of, just have to hope their streaky shooters don't get hot).

Is that fair? Are our defensive issues solvable with the current roster/coach? How would we be most likely to overcome these weaknesses and beat the Kings and Nuggets despite them?
