Why do some translators translate "immortal" as "fairy" for cultivation series?

Ive noticed that in some cultivation series, "immortal" (as in, the eight immortals aka xian) is translated as "fairy" instead and it just seems really weird. Why do they do this? I live in an asian country and nobody translates them to "fairy" here...everyone refers to them as "immortal" in english.
