how do you all even meet people on internet ???

just saw some relationships post in which they said i met them on internet
i mean how do you even know in todays world that if he/she is a legit person or someone faking their profile.

( i am not talking about dating app)

like even if someone is interested in making new friends but at the same time it feels creepy to know that the person whom u r talking to is even real or he/she is just pretending. Views?
