Bathroom remodel permit question
I've got a quote from a reputable contractor in our area to remodel our bathroom, the scope of the project:
- Replace all tile and flooring
- Replace counters
- Replace plumbing fixtures: sinks, shower valve/hardware, bathtub (old tub and new tub are drop in in a built in frame)
- Replace light fixtures
The new bathtub is slightly larger, but will be in the same location. I guess the bathtub probably wouldn't exactly lineup with plumbing so that is the only change to plumbing that I can think of that is needed.
Contractor said no permit is needed for this work. However given the cost of the project I wanted to see if there was some benefit to getting a permit anyway.
I already called my county building inspector and described the project, they said a permit wouldn't be needed either.
On the county website it reads:
"The following work does not require a permit:
Replacement of any switch, fan, light fixture, or similar work that does not alter the mechanical, electrical, or plumbing systems
Cosmetic repairs or remodels such as painting, new flooring, cabinets, vinyl siding, and similar finish work"
So it seems like for my area a permit isn't necessary for this scope of work, but is there a benefit for me to go through the motions to get one anyway when it comes time to sell the house? I can't say I remember permits ever being in the conversation with any real estate transaction I've done in this area, but it's because I didn't know to ask back then.
This is for our house that we live in, no plans to sell anytime soon but perhaps one day we would sell.
Question:
- If there is some benefit to me getting the permit even though it doesn't appear to be necessary, what kind of permit would I be needing here, a plumbing permit? And I would need to schedule inspections and coordinate with my contractor? If the building inspector support line said it wasn't needed I'm assuming it's possible for me to fill out the form(s) to request one anyway? I don't really know if this is a good idea or not, or what the risks/trades offs I should consider here are. Thanks for reading
