The oldest models are the most popular...
By far, the most popular electric guitar models continue to be the stratocaster, telecaster, Les Paul and SG (among others, obviously) - designs from the fifties and sixties. I can't think of another consumer good where this is the case; imagine if we still drove cars or wore clothes that were fashionable when these guitars were first designed.
To be clear, I'm not complaining - I also really love these models and find it difficult to not gravitate towards them. I'm just wondering if we guitarists are a particularly nostalgic bunch. Might also explain why we (myself included) prefer the sound of valve/tube amplifiers despite vacuum tubes being rendered obsolete by transistors in the sixties.
