Canker sore remedies? Baking soda makes them worse

I get pretty bad canker sores every once in a while. Typically they’re stress induced for me. While they’re usually tolerable, every couple years I’ll get a massive one in the very back of my moth/leading into my throat. I’ve read up many times that baking soda numbs the pain. I put baking soda directly on it last night and all day it’s hurt way more. It kills to swallow. I tried the warm salt water thing too, which didn’t do much . Just curious if anyone else has had the opposite effect with baking soda as well?
