Take my identity, please.

Found my compartment door open today. I’m concerned about stolen mail and the potential for identity theft. Regrettably I’m in the habit of checking my mail only every few weeks, so I have no idea how long the compartment has been in this condition.

How might this happen? Is this a deliberate theft situation? No other box was touched, am I just unlucky?

Did I leave it unlocked a few weeks ago when I last gathered mail? Hmm.

Shouldn’t the mail carrier have taken my mail to a safe location? Presumably it was noticed during recent mail drops. Of course it might have happened today after today’s mail delivery, but it seems unlikely. It’s been a few weeks since my last mail check, perhaps the mail carrier is sending me a message to check my mail more often? Employee disgruntlement?

What actions does one take in these situations?
