Do you think BoJack ever significantly grew as a person?
There are two things that come to mind when I think about this.
The first is his last scene with Diane. During his last scene with Herb, BoJack felt entitled to forgiveness and reassurance just because he apologized and felt bad about what he did. When Diane was telling him how what he did affected her, he didn’t do that. He apologized sincerely and seemed to accept that she would be angry at him.
The other is his relationship with Hollyhock. In Free Churro, he says that he realizes you have to show love consistently, not just through occasional grand gestures (which I think was the show criticizing the jerk with a heart of gold trope). And with Hollyhock, it seemed like he was trying to do that, at least when he wasn’t dragging her around on his quest to get drugs. He went to her games, regularly called her, and tried to spend a lot of time with her. Which kind of backfired because it made him weirdly clingy with her.
But I think with both of these you can say that it isn’t really a big accomplishment for an older man and this whole show is the story of an emotionally stunted and immature person becoming a little less emotionally stunted and immature.
