Battery Preconditioning?

Can someone explain battery preconditioning for those who are new to EVs?

I’m not referring to cabin climate control—I mean preconditioning the main battery.

When and why should I precondition the battery? How do I do it—through the app, the vehicle’s console, or both?

Also, do I need to precondition before charging at a remote charging location? If I’ve been driving for a while before arriving, wouldn’t the battery already be warm enough? What’s the benefit of preconditioning in that situation?
