What do you do for motion sickness?

Hi there,

Recent transplant to the UK. I've been taking buses quite often to get where I need to go. I've always had an issue with motion sickness (only buses and cars unless a plane is very turbulent, I guess boats too but I'm very rarely in a boat, lol). However, I never had to take buses so often. If I sit in the front seat of a car I'm mostly alright and if I'm driving there's no issue at all. But I don't have a car here and don't expect to get one any time soon. So I'm stuck with buses and trains for now. Although I don't get motion sickness on trains, buses tend to be much cheaper than trains, and there are plenty of times the train is not an option.

The last bus ride I took was a few hours to go visit a friend. I threw up three times. I brought a barf bag, paper towels, and face cleansing wipes, because I always do just in case, but even though I didn't make any mess on the bus, it was very uncomfortable. I have to return on the same bus in a couple days and I'm really not looking forward to it...

I have diplopia/astigmatism so it could be my vision that is worsening things (and I find taking off my glasses worsens things). I try to get on a bus while very tired so that I can sleep through as much as possible, I try to eat only a small amount beforehand, drink some water but not too much, sit as near the front as possible, and wear only a thin shirt because I find I'm less nauseous when cold. However, these strategies just mitigate, they don't stop the waves of nausea.

Any tips? Meds or otherwise? Pls advise if you have any experience.

ETA: thank you for the advice! I spoke to a pharmacist, got a medication, and it worked on my long bus ride. Hurray ☺️q
