How can I get somebody to rent to me?

Ive looked at some apartments but im scared to apply because it costs money and i dont want it to go down the drain. Im in the process of rebuilding my credit. I’ve been doing good with the business I own so i can make rent. I do have a few new credit cards I’m paying on time. But I also have hospital bills in collections.

I’m willing to put a bigger deposit down if I have to. I’ve only rented from a private owner so I’ve never had to apply. I’m afraid to even apply…
