Unless Dr.’s want patients on benzodiazepines long term they should not Rx them
It’s a nice thought or idea that providers have that patients will only take them for “emergencies” but it’s not gonna happen. Even if you say right now you only take them sparingly, you are on the hook. Once you experience that sweet relaxation and escape and “fix” apart from your anxiety you are always going to be seeking this feeling. In my personal experience, I started off taking one a couple times a week and now I feel like I NEED them to get me through the day. It is the only thing that gives me relief apart from alcohol , which I stay away from because of terrible hangovers. Taking a valium puts me on a sweet soft relaxing cloud of bliss and no more worries. Now my prescriber wants me to get off of them because they are bad long term? And they treat you like you are doing something wrong for taking them. My new prescriber says she wants to drop me if I can’t taper off of them by taking an antidepressant which doesn’t do shit. As if it’s an easy choice and as if I want to depend on a med. That’s bullshit.
To be quite honest I don’t want to get off them because having anxiety is a miserable life and it’s the only thing that brings me peace and helps me manage it.
It’s a similar trend to what’s happening with opioids and doctors. If you prescribe one to someone with an anxiety disorder, they need to assume that person will be seeking them for life.
