How do you open Adderall XR capsules?

My doctor gave me too high a dose, I tried to open the capsule to take a half dose yesterday and I couldn't figure it out. when I googled it they all said you can just pull it apart but that just didn't work for me. I ended up using a pill splitter and the salts got absolutely everywhere so I'd rather not do that again xD
