Does anyone else think what happened with Carlos' dad was unnecessary?

His death, episode before his son's wedding, was completely unnecessary.
Was it because they wanted to keep the drama in the series? The most loved couple in the whole show got married an episode after that, the drama was already there. I just didn't understand why they would do this to Carlos, and if they already did it, then let them give us a more detailed explanation next season.
