What does it take to be considered a proper Sonic fan?
Sorry this is so long, I'm kinda taking a trip down memory lane while asking this question, and I kinda just wanna talk about this stuff with you guys.
Sonic was always what I would consider "my mom's game." It's always been her favorite since she got her Sega Genesis when she was a child, which as you can imagine bled into my own experiences here and there growing up, despite her falling out of video games as a whole as she got older. Due to her influence, I've dabbled in it throughout my life. As a youngin' I played the Classic Collection on my DSi and thoroughly enjoyed them. I watched my mom and stepdad try Sonic Generations and vividly remember them saying it felt weird and that they liked it when it was 2D more lol. They said his jump was "weird." One day when I came home from school, my mom gave me a Sonic comic. I don't remember which one sadly, but I remember Sonic, Metal Sonic, and Amy being present. I thought Metal in particular was rad. I myself got to try Sonic Colors on the Wii, loved it, and was naturally devastated when they returned it to the local Red Box lmao. Also played Sonic and the Secret Rings, but didn't really like it, so I didn't get far. Bought Sonic Mania and thought it was beautiful, but didn't finish it for some reason. And most recently played Sonic Frontiers a couple years back, which I actually really liked and don't understand the hate for. But still, at the end of the day, I don't really consider myself a "Sonic fan." It's an interest that has always come and gone, unlike my interest in other franchises, such as Pokémon, Star Wars, and Halo. This is really my first time interacting with the community, ever. But I recently finally watched Sonic 3, and liked it quite a lot, so I decided I wanted to delve back into the franchise for good. Seeing Metal Sonic at the end sparked something within me. I have since played through both Sonic Adventure games for the first time, and just got Sonic Origins. Will probably obtain and play the other mainline games through totally legitimate means as well. So to wrap this all up in a nice neat bow, where along the path is it acceptable for one to call himself a "Sonic fan?" When is it acceptable for me to use Metal as my profile picture for a little while? Lol
TLDR: My Sonic-loving mom influenced me into having multiple Sonic related experiences throughout my life, but it never really "stuck" as an interest for me like some other franchises did, and I'd move on after a while. Now after seeing Sonic 3, I've made the decision that I want to get into the franchise "full time." Where along the road can one consider himself a proper "Sonic fan?" How many games played? How many shows watched? Which ones?
